Ksenia Stankevich won a prestigious scholarship from the European Federation medicinal chemistry. This scholarship entitles her to participate in the European School of Medicinal Chemistry, which will be held in Italy this summer. There were a total of 13 such scholarships for young scientists from around the world.

Together with other graduate and undergraduate students, Ksenia Stankevich is working on the creation of bioactive coatings for medical implants. Thanks to its properties, such a coating will be able to “convince” the body not to reject artificial bones and joints. This development has already received support Russian Fund basic research and gold medal International exhibition "Rosbiotech" in 2016.

To solve the problem of implant rejection, young scientists from Tomsk Polytechnic University propose coating implants with biologically active compounds that are analogues of the cytokine interleukin-4. This compound is capable of controlling immune cells.

“Basically, implant rejection is caused by a negative reaction of immune cells. Having found a foreign body in the body, they can cause inflammation and a cascade of reactions leading to rejection.

Our approach is to influence macrophages - cells of the innate immune system. Their peculiarity is their enormous plasticity, that is, they can change their phenotype beyond recognition.

At different conditions the same immune cells can both fight the implant and, on the contrary, stimulate the healing process. The performance of a particular function by a macrophage depends on the nature of the stimuli it receives. To “control” macrophages, we use an analogue of the cytokine interleukin-4,” says Ksenia Stankevich.

Thanks to the scholarship won, Ksenia will present the results of this research at European school in medicinal chemistry. The school will be held at the Carlo Bo University of Urbino in Italy in early July.

“The school will bring together leading scientists who will give their lectures and representatives of large pharmaceutical companies, for example, Sanofi (the French company is one of the world's leading pharmaceutical corporations - ed.). Six young scientists will have the opportunity to present their developments in oral presentations to world experts I hope I can be one of them,” notes Ksenia.

3.14. DEADLINES FOR ADMISSION TO GRADUATE STUDY:

until September 30– those entering the field under contracts for the provision of paid educational services for full-time and part-time education.

Enrollment in graduate school is carried out by order of the rector. At the same time, the scientific supervisor and supervisor of the graduate student’s pedagogical practice are approved.

The International Cultural Center of TPU hosted gala reception for undergraduate and graduate students who were recognized as the best in 2015. The titles of “Best TPU Student” and “Best TPU Postgraduate Student” were awarded to 12 polytechnicians in 2016. 95 people applied for the titles “Best TPU Student” and “Best TPU Graduate Student”: 64 students and 31 graduate students. As a result of the competitive selection, six polytechnic students became “Best Postgraduate Students” and six more "The best students." They showed outstanding results in educational and research activities, excellent knowledge foreign languages and presented promising scientific developments.

The average score in the record book for all applicants for the title of “Best Students” is not lower than 4.5. For graduate students, the key condition for participation is winning scientific competitions, grant competitions for young scientists, and having their own inventions.

“The most important bet in the competition is on science, scientific achievements. All participants a good education, but this is education in a scientific trend. They are each successful in their industry. These are accomplished researchers who have confidently taken their first steps into big science, the elite who will glorify the university in the near future,

    - says the head of the department of master's, postgraduate and doctoral studies at TPU Alena Zakharova. —Our competition allows the university to sum up the results of the year and recognize outstanding young scientists and their leaders. This is how we create a personal success story for our best graduate students and undergraduates, so that they feel a sense of belonging to their home university, their institutes and laboratories.”

Thus, the title of “Best TPU Student” this year was won by Evgenia Dyrina. She introduced the competition experts to her universal methodology for introducing lean production tools in Russian companies in any industry. She has been working on it for three years now; most of the results were included in her master’s thesis, which Evgenia is preparing to defend just the other day. The student has achieved great success in testing lean production technology at enterprises in various industries in our region, including the TPU hotel, the LAMA group of companies, a food delivery company, Tomskkabel LLC, Tomsk House-Building Company (TDSC) and others.

“I hope that in all the companies where we were, this work continues to reduce unnecessary time and constantly improve the production process,” says a student of the Department of Management at the TPU Institute of Social and Humanitarian Technologies (ISHT) Evgenia Dyrina. “I’m very glad that I became the best student.” I have been moving towards this goal since my first year. First she was a laureate, then she took second place, and now - victory. I would like to thank everyone who helped me: my supervisor, department, institute, my parents. This is our common achievement."

Evgenia’s supervisor is a senior lecturer at the Department of Management at ISHT TPU Nadezhda Gavrikovanotes that it is very easy and pleasant to work with her.

“It is difficult to be the leader of a careless student, but it is always easy for the best one. You just need to guide him and help him. Therefore, winning the competition is, first of all, the merit of Zhenya, her perseverance, her leadership qualities and determination,”

    - Nadezhda Gavrikova admits.

Received the title “Best TPU Graduate Student” Ekaterina Filippova from the Physico-Technical Institute (PTI). She presented keratoimplants for the treatment of corneal diseases. Analogues of implants exist in the world, but they do not meet clinical requirements. The main difference between Ekaterina’s development is the porosity of the implant. This allows you to restrain excess fluid flow and at the same time nourish the cornea.

“Our implant will be used in the treatment of corneal dystrophy, for patients who have had any surgical interventions on the anterior segment of the eye. Keratopathy is an inflammation manifested by impaired transparency of the eye and deterioration of vision. Thanks to our implant, the disease goes into remission,”

    - explains Ekaterina.

Her scientific supervisor, professor of the Department of Experimental Physics Vladimir Pichugin, notes that they have developed both the medical component - the method of treatment, and the technical one - the method of manufacturing the implant, the corresponding membrane, permeability, shape. Now the development of polytechnics is awaiting clinical trials.

All laureates of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd degrees received a special one-time scholarship from the rector. On behalf of the university management, the winners were congratulated by the Vice-Rector for scientific work and TPU innovations Alexander Dyachenko:

“I thank the scientific leaders who raised such a strong generation of young scientists. We are proud of our best students and graduate students. You are our future, new successes and victories for you for the benefit of Russian science.”

The names of the winners will also be included in the University’s Gallery of Honor. Another surprise that the organizers of the competition and the university management prepared for the finalists and laureates of the competition were the keys to single rooms in the new TPU residential complex.

Among the lucky winners is the competition finalist, ISHT student, Do Thi Hanh. On behalf of all foreign students, the girl thanked the teachers of Tomsk Polytechnic University for their support, understanding and help.

“I am proud to be a TPU student. Thank you to the university for interesting studies and student life in a comfortable environment. Thanks to the university, I was able to realize my talents in science. I am glad to have the opportunity to continue my studies here in the Master's program. I wish my university further success. Tomsk Polytechnic is the best"

    - Do Thi Hanh said.
