Notes

He looked at his watch. It was still only four o'clock. I didn’t want to sleep, I had finished the punch, and there was still nothing to do. He got up, walked back and forth, put on a warm frock coat and hat and left the tent. The night was dark and damp; a barely audible dampness fell from above. The fires did not burn brightly nearby, in the French guard, and glittered far through the smoke along the Russian line. Everywhere it was quiet, and the rustling and trampling of the movement that had already begun could be clearly heard. French troops to take a position.
Napoleon walked in front of the tent, looked at the lights, listened to the stomping and, passing by a tall guardsman in a shaggy hat, who stood sentry at his tent and, like a black pillar, stretched out when the emperor appeared, stopped opposite him.
- Since what year have you been in the service? - he asked with that usual affectation of rough and gentle belligerence with which he always treated the soldiers. The soldier answered him.
- Ah! un des vieux! [A! of the old people!] Did you receive rice for the regiment?
- We got it, Your Majesty.
Napoleon nodded his head and walked away from him.

At half past five Napoleon rode on horseback to the village of Shevardin.
It was beginning to get light, the sky cleared, only one cloud lay in the east. Abandoned fires burned out in the weak morning light.
A thick, lonely cannon shot rang out to the right, rushed past and froze in the midst of general silence. Several minutes passed. A second, third shot rang out, the air began to vibrate; the fourth and fifth sounded close and solemnly somewhere to the right.
The first shots had not yet sounded when others were heard, again and again, merging and interrupting one another.
Napoleon rode up with his retinue to the Shevardinsky redoubt and dismounted from his horse. The game has begun.

Returning from Prince Andrei to Gorki, Pierre, having ordered the horseman to prepare the horses and wake him up early in the morning, immediately fell asleep behind the partition, in the corner that Boris had given him.
When Pierre fully woke up the next morning, there was no one in the hut. Glass rattled in the small windows. The bereitor stood pushing him away.
“Your Excellency, your Excellency, your Excellency...” the bereitor said stubbornly, without looking at Pierre and, apparently, having lost hope of waking him up, swinging him by the shoulder.
- What? Began? Is it time? - Pierre spoke, waking up.

We reached the Most Pure. But to my companion, a restless and infinitely positive person, Elena Minina, these adventures seemed not enough. Well, we didn’t get stuck on the dirt road! And even the car was almost clean! And then this Yandex navigator draws a seductively light and shortcut from Prechistoye to Przhevalsky. We definitely need to scout out the road, Elena Alexandrovna decided! I didn’t particularly mind, because I myself love getting into the wilderness. But before going into the thick of the Smolensk Lakeland, we decided to take a ride to Ozernoye. Fortunately, from Prechistoye to Ozernoye is just a stone’s throw away!

The town-forming enterprise of the village is Smolenskaya State District Power Plant. GRES, for those who don’t know, is the State District Power Plant. True, in Ozernoe it has long been no longer state-owned. I don’t really understand about energy, but as Wiki says, the owner of the power plant is E.ON Russia JSC, a Russian energy company created as a result of the reform of RAO UES.

The village of Ozerny, when viewed from the road, is quite neat and prosperous locality. There is even one nine-story building here. There is a large war memorial and a beautiful church here. The place somehow reminded me of Belarus. Just as clean and lots of space.

Well, quite!

Here it is, the hope and support of the local population! Energy!

This is the village. There are young people, children are born.

Well, now for the juice. After driving around Oerny we return to Prechistoe. It's about three o'clock, the sun is shining, everything is conducive to going in search of adventure.
The purple line below is how Yandex saw our route. The path is not long, about 40 km. We decided to turn off the main road and follow the navigator.

First, as expected, asphalt. Then the primer turns into asphalt in the villages. Villages, naturally, are more dead than alive. Although, as a rule, a strong, well-kept house is found everywhere.

We turn on the musical accompaniment.

Once upon a time life was in full swing here.

Cute, cozy villages with apple trees and rowan trees along the road.

I liked this house.

It's like this inside.

To his left is life. Goats are grazing.

The further we go, the sadder it becomes from the rickety huts. But this sadness is somehow light. These are pictures from the past. Have you seen The Langoliers based on the story by Stephen King? It seems that if you enter such a hut, you will pass through a hole in time.

Along the way we meet a local cyclist. We are wondering if it is possible to drive from here to Przhevalsky. The man grins: from here to Przhevalsky last time Germans in Patriotic War went! But we don't trust the guy. We have a Yandex navigator, and it says that we can drive through. Is it possible that a smart machine that accurately finds all the nooks and crannies will fail here? I admit honestly, a worm of doubt has settled inside me. But Elena Minina decisively directs her Kia forward into the unknown. In such cases, she recommends that unsure companions simply close their eyes. There is a bag of food in the back seat. If we get stuck, we won’t die of hunger. And then there’s the optimistic sign. It turns out that we were promised paid services! What doubts can there be?!

Payphone, of course.

The road is getting narrower, there are fewer and fewer people. Cellular communications are gradually disappearing.

Hut on the edge.

Gradually we find ourselves in the forest. The road is still well paved, but the trees are getting closer.

Wonderful nature. Anthills are everywhere! The man didn’t lie about the Germans. There are trenches all around along the road. It used to be hot here.

While I'm anxiously studying the navigator, my companion stops the car and goes to pick mushrooms. "Look, what a fly agaric!"

Soon I had no time for the camera at all. We moved slowly, the navigator periodically informed us “you have lost your route.” What the hell could be the route here, I think! We are in a deep forest, there is no cell phone service, there is no one around, only a rut from rare cars leads to God knows where. But after a couple of minutes there is another reminder: “you are back on the route”! Feelings are mixed. Soon our path is blocked by a flimsy bridge, through which we jumped, not without fear. While I’m racking my brains over how to get through without getting stuck, the logs are too flimsy and there are holes all around, Elena Aleksandrovna captures this process with her camera!

Deep puddles appear, through which, having applied the gas, we quickly dash through in all-wheel drive. Somewhere you have to go out and check the depth. I really don’t want to get stuck here!

And here, in the middle of the impassable wilderness - a village!

For some time the road becomes stronger, it begins to seem that it will continue to do so. We drive another kilometer and a half and come to a series of ditches filled with water in the middle of a dense forest. There are ribbons hanging on the trees. There were people here!

At that moment I probably looked alarmed. And next to me sat a woman who, smiling sweetly, was determined to storm these ditches. I decided to present my arguments to her. The first and decisive one was the fact that at that moment I was driving. Having difficulty hiding my excitement, I switch the selector to R mode and begin to back up the car. All this was accompanied by a presentation of oral arguments: there are 25 kilometers of uncertainty ahead. The road is getting worse. If something breaks, there will be no one to ask for help. There is no cell phone service. And in general, on such trips you need to go in a well-pumped jeep with a winch, chainsaw, crankcase protection, tents and a supply of provisions. It is advisable to know the route and be prepared to spend the night in the forest. Elena Alexandrovna gives up. By that time the time was uncontrollably approaching 17:00.

I somehow turned around and went back. Returning to the last village we met - Berdyaevo, we see a residential building. A silhouette flashed through the door. We wish you communication, press the horn. An elderly man with a dog comes out of the house, we introduce ourselves.

Well, it’s not in vain that we climbed into this cockroach darkness. The speech and eyes of this elderly man reveal a different breed from him than is usually found in such places. We started a conversation with him. It turned out that the man lives here alone, with a dog. He says that he used to live in Moscow, studied mechanics, has inventions, writes textbooks, taught at MSTU, Moscow State University and some other university. Now on a well-deserved rest. We start asking who he is, what his name is.

I won’t introduce myself, I don’t want to. Academic degree there is, everything is there. No need! Because they know me. I don’t want to, otherwise they’ll start...

We began to delve into the subject. " Higher education turned into a fiction,” says the hermit professor. - Blat, acquaintances, and so on... As a result, such a shell of false scientists and false teachers has formed, who don’t even know the subject, but students are given twos and threes. It is very easy to determine who they are. To do this you need to test papers were developed, for example, in Perm, and transmitted via the Internet to universities in other cities. And let the teachers solve these problems themselves! Then everything will become clear who teaches our students."

We ask if people often pass through here. “They pass by,” says our interlocutor, “but not often. All sorts of people come.” When we just started getting to know him, the man incredulously asked who we were and where we were from. Are you welcome? This is understandable. In such places you are left alone with nature and uninvited guests.

“In general, I don’t like people. It seems to me that a person must understand who he is. And only here do you begin to understand yourself, alone.”

Isn’t it scary to live like this, we ask? No, what are you talking about, the hermit answers. “What’s so scary about that? At my age there’s nothing to be afraid of anymore, I’m 72 years old. I’m going to die anyway!”

From the story of our interlocutor, we learned that a bear lives somewhere nearby. Sometimes he wanders around the village, in the spring. There is a closed lake here, Paltsevskoe, where there is untouched, pristine nature. There are plants here that are listed in the Red Book. “I go there, sometimes pick mushrooms, sometimes I even swim there. But you can’t get there,” says our interlocutor.

The hermit called the red payphone hanging against the backdrop of the empty hut a fiction, which is in the spirit of our state: “At the top they said to equip it with communications, they allocated crazy money for this, but not a single payphone works.”

This is what he is, a portrait of Russia.

During the conversation, I timidly ask whether it is possible to get to Przhevalsky along this road. It turned out that the man on the bicycle was right: there is no road to Przhevalsky here. A sigh of relief. No wonder I led my companion astray!

Having already returned home, I find on the Smolensk Auto Forum a story about a hike along this route. It turns out that the road ended 2 km after our return point. But there is another village there, after which a windfall and impassable swamps begin. We didn't even get there. But now, having scouted out the route, Elena Minina and I decided to return here again and get to know the hermit professor better. And at the same time, explore a village of three houses called Rudnya. Who knows, we may still have to connect Prechistoe and Przhevalskoye with a real off-road run.
