In the end, about Maelef

(about rejoicing), reason to David.

This psalm is similar to the 13th psalm, only with two more verses. Therefore, we will only explain them here, since the explanation of other verses is made in the 13th Psalm. Two verses are added here so that it does not seem that this psalm is mistakenly counted twice; but so that it can be seen that although both of these psalms are one in the pronunciation of the words, they differ in thought, because the first condemns the rage and malice of Sennacherib and Rapsakes, which they showed against Hezekiah, and the last psalm accuses the fury of the Jews against Christ.

If this psalm had not differed in thought from the 13th, then it would not have been counted twice and would not have been repeated, and both the 70 interpreters who translated it and the fathers who explained it would not have made such a mistake. Moreover, this psalm also has a different inscription, different from the inscription of the 13th Psalm, indicating the end to the reader because of the prophecies contained in it about the Jews, which were fulfilled at the end. The inscription about "Maelef" means the same as about the face, where the preposition οπερ is used instead of περι by transference. Reading this psalm, we Christians rejoice because of the fulfillment of what is predicted in it (1).

(1) St. gave a beautiful explanation of this. Gregory of Nyssa: When you hear that in the inscription after the word: “to the end,” there follows “about Maeleth,” then you should know that this mysteriously gives you advice - not to weaken in the fight against temptations, but to look at the end of victory, which consists in the fact that your soul will be numbered among the angelic face, after its purification through the attack of temptations, as we hear about their attack on Lazarus. Here, perhaps someone will ask why this psalm was written twice? To this we answer that atheism, according to which another says that there is no God, is a great and terrible sin, that the Holy Spirit was not content with a one-time denunciation of this sin, but considered it necessary to disgrace and defeat him twice, through deep denunciations and accusations, to show how repugnant and hateful he is to all other sins. And Litinus in his psalter adds a second reason, that is, that the 13th Psalm was written prophetically about Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians, and this one could be written about Antiochus Epiphanes; also adds a third, which is the 13th Psalm. contains a prophecy about the corrupted world and the contemporaries of David, and this one about the contemporaries of Christ. And I will add a fourth reason why that psalm was written twice, because it mentions the corrupt morals of people who lived before Christ, in which sense the ap. accepts it. Paul. So, in order to show how necessary the coming of Christ was, he described the corrupt state of people, which necessarily requires a Savior and Redeemer.

For, says Jacob, he will rejoice, and Israel will be glad; and we are the new Israel, as we explained in the 13th Psalm. The expression: understanding means that those reading this psalm need understanding so that they know that although in words it is similar to the 13th Psalm, in thoughts it has a mysterious difference. So, we will begin to explain only these two different verses, since this psalm exceeds the 13th psalm, as we said.

. The speech is mad in his heart: there is no God; having become corrupted and disgusted by iniquity, do no good(1).

Look for an explanation of these words in the 13th Psalm; and the expression “in lawlessness”, found here, is replaced there by the word: “in the undertakings” (in aspirations) of one’s own, - “do not do good”, in the 13th Psalm it says: “do not do goodness”.

(1) Basil the Great says: Disagreement of life with the commandments can be called a sign of renunciation of God, in accordance with the words: the madman said: there is no God, but as if for some indication of him, to reveal who he is, (David) adds: they are corrupted in lawlessness. For this Scripture signifies a falling away from general concepts about God, and the wicked and godless thought that dominated all of humanity before the appearance of the Savior and shows that the most destructive depravity is, as it were, a feature of the nesting of such wickedness. And how they corrupted the healthy seeds sown in themselves about God and gave themselves over to the service of vile idols, dividing wickedness into complete atheism and polytheism, and it happened that, according to their godless and vile deeds, they fell into all kinds of evil; then these madmen, that is, atheists, having expelled piety from their souls, together with him, as with a king, they cast out all virtue, assuring themselves that there is no helmsman who would hold the rudders of all creation, and without fear they do every inappropriate thing. The words of his brother St. Gregory of Nyssa: Like a madman says in his heart, that is, he thinks that there is no God above everything. Having become corrupted and vile in such actions of the mind: for falling away from what exists is truly corruption and destruction in its very composition. For how can anyone be in his being without being in existence? How can anyone be in existence without believing in the existence of existence? But a truly existing God must certainly exist, as the vision of God who appeared to him testified to the great Moses. So, whoever throws out the existence of God from his mind and says that He does not exist, he damages his own existence and is deprived of what is essential. Therefore, the thought that there is no God and Provider is the reason for our corruption in iniquities; and a corrupt life makes us vile and hateful to God, why is it necessary for a doctor to come and heal our corruption, to bring those who have become disgusting closer to ourselves. The words of Hesychius: Whose would it be if not a madman, about whom Isaiah also said: a madman speaks foolish things and his heart thinks about vain things (). What does it mean? the fact that, acting badly and absurdly and seeing God’s long-suffering towards us, instead of thanking and glorifying Him as good and kind, they fall into madness, thinking that God does not observe human affairs, but that everything is done without reason and by chance . Didymus also speaks beautifully: He who thinks badly about God strives for other evils: having expelled piety from his soul, he also expels with it all virtue that follows piety as its king.

. God came from heaven to the sons of men, see, If you understand, or seek God

. All have deviated, together with the obscenity of the Bysha: do not do good, do not do one thing(not a single one - there is: do no goodness).

. Will all the workers of iniquity, my people who devour bread, understand that they have not called upon the Lord?

. There, fearful of fear, where there was no fear

The explanation of these words can be seen in the 13th Psalm. But there it is written “they were afraid”, and here “they were afraid”.

Like the God of scattering the bones of people-pleasers

Here David calls the Jews people-pleasers, a name Christ repeatedly reproached them with when he called them hypocrites and judging by appearance. For, out of their philanthropy, the Jews spoke for the pleasure or pleasure of Caesars: everyone who makes himself a king is an opponent of Caesar; also: we have no king except Caesar (); and they said to Pilate: if you release Him, then you are not a friend of Caesar (). So, these man-pleasing Jews are bones, or tribes, of which the Jewish race is composed, just as the body is made of bones - these, I say, God scattered and scattered the tribes, so that they would be slaves and subject to all nations. Or so, that when the Jews were exterminated by the weapons of the Romans, their dead bodies and bones were torn apart wild animals, kites and other carnivorous birds (1).

(1) The words of Theodoret: He will not sin if he calls Rapsacus a man-pleaser, who, being from the family of Jews, sharpened his tongue in blasphemy, thinking by this to please the Assyrians. (And equally) some, under the apostate Julian, who reigned after this, having left God, were abandoned mutually and from Him.

Ashamed, because God humiliated them

The Jews, he says, among all nations have turned to shame and disgrace, because they lead the most miserable and superstitious lives, having become more miserable than all the people of this world. And they suffered this because Christ humiliated them, making them an object of reproach for the whole world (1).

(1) Words of St. Kirilla: What bones is he talking about? about the powers of the teachings of the Greeks and the wicked, which they concluded in their writings. For they found pleasure in the brilliance of expressions and in the composition of words, for which he calls them people-pleasers. But the power of their teaching, which is expressed by the name of bones, was completely destroyed by Christ, who showed it to be ineffective and humiliated them, that is, the writers of Hellenic dogmas.

. Who will give salvation to Israel from Zion? God will always bring back the captivity of his people, Jacob will rejoice and Israel will rejoice.

For an explanation of these words, see the 13th Psalm. And the words of the present psalm: when “God” returns, they read: when “the Lord” returns.

Psalm 52: The Folly of Atheism

The main difference between this psalm and Psalm 13 is that the name of God here is not Jehovah, but Elohim. In Psalm 13, the fool denies the existence of a covenant-keeping God (Jehovah, the Lord) who is very interested and concerned about the welfare of His people. Here the madman denies the existence of a powerful Lord God (Elohim) who guards and governs the universe.

(Introduction to Psalm 53) In Psalm 13 the name Jehovah is used four times and Elohim three times. Here the name Elohim appears seven times.

God can be denied in different senses: some deny that the Creator is interested in any human race or a group of people; others deny any possibility of the existence of God ( Scripture Union Daily Notes).

52:2 A madman is not necessarily a narrow-minded or stupid person. He may be a brilliant intellectual in terms of modern education, but at the same time ignore the evidence of the person, power and providence of God. He lives in willful ignorance. "The corresponding Hebrew word conveys the idea of a conscious reluctance to acknowledge the truth."

Atheism is associated with degradation and vice, sometimes it is their cause, sometimes it is a consequence. Therefore, it is not surprising that those who say: “There is no Elohim” are corrupted and commit heinous crimes. There is not one among them who does good.

52:3 From atheists in particular we move on to humanity in general. Paul quotes portions of this verse in Romans 3, pointing out the utter sinfulness of all mankind. This accusation is, of course, fair. Looking from heaven at the sons of men, God does not see one who in himself has the wisdom to fear God. If it were not for the ministry of the Holy Spirit, no one would seek God.

52:4 Everyone has turned away from the living God. They have all become obscene. No one does good in the sense that no one can earn the mercy and favor of the Lord by his actions. 52:5, 6 We come to a specific type of sinner, namely, those apostates who persecute God's people. How can they be so shortsighted? They show cruelty and do not pray. They destroy the faithful as easily, without thinking, as they eat bread. They do not feel the need to turn to God in prayer. Apparently, they do not think about the fact that one day they will be gripped by an incomparable fear. God will scatter the bones of those who fight against His faithful followers.

52:7 In the last verse, David prays for the coming of the Messiah. This is the Deliverer who will come from Zion (Rom. 11:26) and save the believers of Israel. On this day Israel will be restored, then Jacob will rejoice and Israel will be glad.

The interpretation of the Orthodox Psalm 52 has noticeable overlap with the interpretation of Psalm 13. Both of them were written during the time of the persecution of David by King Saul, who knew that the young psalmist had been appointed as his successor, but could not come to terms with this idea, and wanted to destroy a potential rival.

The Christian text of Psalm 52 contains the contrition of the future great king of Israel not so much about his own misfortunes, but about the lack of faith and piety among the entire human race.

When is it customary to read the prayer Psalm 53?

The text of Christian Psalm 52 reveals the main idea: main reason all lawlessness and sin is man's denial of the existence of God. An unbeliever does not have a moral guideline; he does not have the feeling that the Lord sees all his deeds and thoughts, so he gradually goes over to the side of serving evil. The psalm also implies that a believer, on the contrary, feels the constant presence of God, and this keeps him within the framework of spiritual laws. It is recommended for fishermen to read and listen to Psalm 53 online to ensure good fishing.

To the head of the choir. On a wind weapon. David's teaching.

The madman said in his heart: “There is no God.” They became corrupt and committed heinous crimes; there is no one who does good. God looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there was one who understood, seeking God. They all deviated and became equally obscene; there is no one who does good, not even one. Will not the workers of iniquity, who eat my people as they eat bread, and do not call on God, come to their senses? There they will fear fear, where there is no fear, the bones of those who take up arms against you. You will put them to shame because God has rejected them. Who will give salvation to Israel from Zion! When God brings back the captivity of His people, then Jacob will rejoice and Israel will rejoice.

Christian Psalter, text of Psalm 52 in Church Slavonic language

Reche is mad in his heart; there is God. Having become corrupted and disgusted by lawlessness, do not do good. God speaks from heaven to the sons of men, see if you understand or seek God. All evaded, together with indecency there was; do not do good, bring it to one. Will not all the workers of iniquity, who eat my bread for food, understand? I didn’t call on the Lord. There, fearful of fear, where there was no fear; like God scatters the bones of people-pleasers; I was ashamed, for God had humiliated them. Who will give salvation to Israel from Zion? God will always bring back the captivity of his people, Jacob will rejoice and Israel will rejoice.

Psalm 108 - prayer-curse. It contains the wish “Let his children be orphans, and his wife a widow.” Psalm 108 is David's prayer to the Lord, asking for vengeance on his enemies who are relentlessly persecuting him. This psalm is replete with curses, mainly directed at one of David's sworn enemies. Many people offer prayers for the death of their enemies. But not all of these prayers reach God. In addition, often evil thoughts directed against someone turn against the person praying. This means that in heaven those prayers that should be heard are heard. This psalm is similar to the cabalistic ritual of Pulse de Nura.

Opening Prayers:

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Lord Eternal Heavenly Father, You said with Your most pure lips that nothing can be done without You. I ask for your help! I begin every business with You, for Your glory and the salvation of my soul. And now, and forever, and forever and ever. Amen."

“Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed One, our souls.”

"Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us"(3 times)

“All-Holy Trinity, God and Creator of the whole world, hasten and direct my heart, begin with reason and finish the good works of these God-inspired books, even the Holy Spirit will vomit the mouth of David, which I now want to say, I, unworthy, understanding my ignorance, falling down and praying to Ty , and asking for help from You: Lord, guide my mind and confirm my heart, not about the words of the mouth of this cold, but about the mind of those who say to rejoice, and prepare to do good deeds, even as I learn, and I say: let me be enlightened by good deeds, to Judge of the right hand of Thy country I will be a partaker with all Thy chosen ones. And now, O Master, bless, and sigh from my heart and sing with my tongue, saying to my face:

Come, let us worship our King God.

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ, our King God.

Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and our God."

"Our Father, who art in heaven! Hallowed be your name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, as it is in heaven and on earth. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors, and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”(3 times)

Closing prayers:

“Heavenly King, Comforter, Soul of truth, Who is everywhere and fulfills everything, Treasure of good things and Giver of life, come and dwell in us, and cleanse us from all filth, and save, O Blessed One, our souls.”

“Give thanks to Thy unworthy servants, O Lord, for Thy great good deeds upon us; we glorify Thee, bless, thank Thee, sing and magnify Thy compassion, and slavishly cry out to Thy love: O our Benefactor, glory to Thee. servants of indecency, having been vouchsafed, O Master, we earnestly flow to You with thanksgiving, and we glorify You as the Benefactor and Creator, crying out: Glory to You, All-Bountiful God. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen."

"Theotokos, Christian Helper, Your servants, having acquired Your intercession, cry out to You in gratitude: Rejoice, Most Pure Virgin Mother of God, and always deliver us from all our troubles with Your prayers, One who will soon intercede. We thank Thee, Lord our God, for all Thy good deeds, even from the first age to the present, in us, Thy unworthy servants (names), who were, known and unknown, about those revealed and unmanifested, even those who were in deed and in word: who loved us as and You deigned to give Your Only Begotten Son for us, making us worthy to be worthy of Your love. Grant with Your word wisdom and with Your fear inhale strength from Your power, and whether we have sinned, whether willingly or unwillingly, forgive and not impute, and keep our soul holy, and present it to Thy Throne, having a clear conscience, and the end is worthy of Thy love for mankind; and remember, O Lord, all who call upon Thy name in truth, remember all who desire good or evil against us: for all are men, and every man is in vain; We also pray to You, Lord, grant us Your great mercy."

"Cathedral of Saints Angel and Archangel, with all heavenly powers He sings to You and says: Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of hosts, heaven and earth are filled with Your glory. Hosanna in the highest, blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, Hosanna in the highest. Save me, Who art thou King on high, save me and sanctify me, Source of sanctification; For from You all creation is strengthened, To You countless warriors sing the Trisagion hymn. Unworthy of You, who sits in the unapproachable light, of whom all things are terrified, I pray: enlighten my mind, cleanse my heart, and open my lips, so that I may worthily sing to You: Holy, Holy, Holy art thou, Lord, always, now, and ever and to endless ages of ages. Amen."

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, prayers for the sake of Thy Most Pure Mother, our reverend and God-bearing fathers and all the saints, have mercy on us. Amen.”
